The Garuda Boot Camp was conducted on September 23-24, 2010 at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), Pune. The objective of the 2-day Boot Camp was to make Garuda more amenable and accessible to users and also to understand their requirements. This event was focused on promoting Garuda usage and more application enablement on the Grid.
Dr. V. Sundararajan, Head SECG, C-DAC Pune, delivered the welcome speech and addressed the opening session. Prof. D. J. Saikia, Deptt. Of Extragalactic Radio Astronomy, AGNs and Nearby Galaxies, NCRA gave brief introduction about NCRA activities. Dr. Hemant Darbari, Executive Director, C-DAC, Pune, delivered a brief talk on activities in the Indian linguistics domain. Dr. Subrata Chattopadhyay, Chief Investigator-Garuda and Program Coordinator, C-DAC, Knowledge Park, Bangalore provided a brief overview of Garuda. He covered the status of the project, purpose of the boot camp and announced the new membership policy.
Total 68 participants from Pune, Mumbai and Nasik comprising Garuda users, Application developers and non-Garuda Partners participated in this Boot Camp. The participants were mostly from different faculties of Pune University, HPT Arts and RYK Science College, Nasik, College of Engineering, Pune, NCL Pune, IIT Bombay, C-DAC, Pune.
The workshop focused on various topics like HPC and Grid concepts, Garuda Grid overview, Grid security and IGCA, grid Access methods and Tools, Utility services, and Application enablement on grid. All the sessions were handled by Bijoy MB, Priyanka Sharma, and Shikha Mehrotra of C-DAC KP, Bangalore. Garuda Applications presentations and demo were given by Amit S. on Phylogeny of Bioinformatics group, Sachin N. and Ritesh B. on PARSEC application, Gauri K. on OpenSees application, Satyajit M. and Ancymolt T. on Seismic applications ported on Garuda.
Hands-on sessions were arranged in three sessions for users benefit. A special quiz based on Grid and HPC technology was conducted to refresh the topics covered and encourage participants. Open session was conducted on September 24, 2010 for participants to express their views, support expected from C-DAC, and suggestions for improvement. The feedback from each participant was collected which will be used for improvement of similar workshop in future and to support application enablement on Garuda grid.
