The Garuda Boot Camp was conducted on during December 28-29, 2010 at Malabar Christian College, Calicut. This event was jointly organized by Centre for Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD) Chem-Informatics community. The event was hosted by Malabar Christian College.
Dr Sarat Chandra Babu, Executive Director, C-DAC, Bangalore (KP) presented the profile of C-DAC and Garuda's contribution in this collaborative effort. He also expressed C-DAC's willingness to move along with CSIR's OSDD and also to take up parallel computing training. The participants were only from Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD) community. The objective of this Boot Camp was to make Garuda more accessible, familiar and usable by the OSDD community. This event was focused on enabling and running OSDD application on Garuda.
Dr. Subrata Chattopadhyay, Chief Investigator-Garuda welcomed all dignitaries and participants. Dr Samir K Brahmachari, Director General, CSIR addressed the participants and indicated the special value of this event. While inaugurating the Boot camp, Dr. Brahmachari expressed his appreciation at the coming together of Grid Garuda and OSDD. He also opined that C-DAC has demonstrated India's might and appreciated that the original architecture of C-DAC's HPC systems are way ahead of design of other developed nations. He felt that with the kind of objectives of OSDD and making use of Grid resources will provide an access to Scientists, Academicians and Students to effectively utilize the Grid resources to arrive at an affordable drug detection. He also requested C-DAC to take up human resource development in parallel computing, specifically with a focus on Scientific Computing
Garuda users and application developers from OSDD community participated in this Boot Camp. Totally fifty participants from Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Salem, Vadodara, Delhi, Lucknow, and Calicut attended this Boot Camp. In the workshop, various topics like High Performance Computing, Grid concepts, Garuda Grid overview, Grid security, Indian Grid Certification Authority, Grid Access methods, Tools, Application enablement were presented. Galaxy demo was presented on the first day of the workshop. Hands on session were arranged in three parts for users benefit. All these sessions were handled by Ms Janaki CH, Mr Shamjith KV and Mr Bijoy.
The entire event was co-ordinated by Ms. Divya, Team Co-ordinator, SENG.
The workshop concluded successfully on December 29, 2010. Dr Zakir Thomas Director OSDD, Dr A Jaleel, Dr. Subrata Chattopadhyay were present for the closing session and addressed the participants.
